The Center for Public Integrity, one of the oldest and most storied nonprofit newsrooms in the United States, is considering merging with a competitor or shutting down amid turmoil in its top ranks and financial difficulties that have significantly sapped its reserves, according to two people with knowledge of the organization’s inner workings. The nonprofit fell about $2.5 million short of its budget goal of around $6 million for 2023, according to the two people, who would speak only anonymously to protect their relationships within the organization. This month, Paul Cheung, the organization’s chief executive, resigned after an employee accused him of unethical behavior. The board also eliminated the position of its editor in chief, Matt DeRienzo, who has left the nonprofit. In a statement, the Center for Public Integrity said it had a “financially challenged past year” like many other nonprofit media organizations.

MAPUTO, Mozambique (AP) — Protests in Mozambique over disputed local election results resulted in the deaths of a police officer and a civilian Friday, a corruption watchdog group said. The unrest followed Thursday's official validation of the election results, which gave the ruling Frelimo party victory in 64 out of 65 municipalities. A consortium of election observers had reported widespread ballot stuffing, voter intimidation and falsification of results in favor of Frelimo in the Oct. 11 elections. Demonstrators barricaded streets during the protests, which were concentrated in Mozambique's capital, Maputo, and the northern cities of Nampula and Nacala. In Maputo, main opposition party Renamo led its supporters in a march.

The complaint alleged that the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality discriminated against Black residents by issuing permits that authorized new industrial facilities. Last year, the EPA announced a critical civil-rights investigation into Louisiana, looking into whether the state had violated the rights of Black residents in Cancer Alley. The mayor of Erie, Pennsylvania, wants the Trump campaign to pay the city for service before his rally on Saturday. Trump's campaign has more than enough cash on hand — $22.5 million — to remedy the request. According to a recent report from the Erie Times-News, Erie Mayor Joe Schember wants to be reimbursed for any fees related to the upcoming rally ahead of time, after Trump's campaign failed to repay the city more than $35,000 following a campaign event in 2018. "We're going to see whether we can get some payment from them in advance this time," he told the Erie Times-News. Erie isn't the only city Trump's campaigns have failed to reimburse.

But the Democratic lawmaker didn't disclose the purchase until this month, weeks after a federal deadline. Feinstein has not yet been contacted by the Senate Ethics Committee on whether she will face a fine, Mentzer added. Members of Congress are generally allowed to buy and sell individual stocks — to the chagrin of some government reform advocates — so long as they publicly disclose the transactions. Not until May did Feinstein publicly disclose her husband's Facebook stock purchase, investigative journalism outfit Sludge revealed later in 2018.
